A well-written essay, research paper, or report demonstrates student knowledge about past and current expert thinking on a particular topic. To demonstrate their learning, they bring together different perspectives on the topic, evidence for their thesis, and factual information from books, journal articles, interviews, reports, and relevant sources. After interpreting these sources, they present their argument by putting the ideas into their own words, making sure to cite the original sources.
